The Wedding Date Disaster – Avery Flynn
5/5
It is super rare that books get a full 5/5 rating but I discovered Avery Flynn when her novel Parental Guidance came out and I’ve been hooked since. Buyer be aware – they are short. I can read the books in their entirety in about three hours. I once read three of her books in the same day because I was hooked on the Hartigans. Also, all of her books seem to come in trilogies, but most of her back catalog seems to also be loosely related. In this case, Hadley’s roommate Fionna is a Hartigan so it ties into the Hartigans series that I mentioned reading all of in one sitting before. As far as I have found, all of the characters through the book live in the fictional Harbor City, somewhere on the East Coast. That being said, she is a little bit unique in the fact that all of the books in all of the trilogies are also standalone. It’s a very cool system and it means that I continuously feel connected to the characters and Harbor City. It’s like coming home without exhausting options and storylines.
The general premise of the book is that Hadley Donavan is taking her best friend and billionaire Webster Holt to her sisters wedding as her date. At the last minute, Web gets sick with food poisoning and his brother Will has to step in. Hadley refers to Will as E.T. or Evil Twin because of the animosity between the two. Will thinks Hadley is a gold digger out to steal Web’s money, but steps in for Web and goes to Nebraska with Hadley for Adalyn’s wedding.
In terms of the characters, I really liked Hadley. She is all of me. 30s, kind of a mess, knows what she wants to do but hasn’t quite gotten it going, putting forth the picture perfect life on social media. I found her incredibly relatable and I will be very surprised if her sister Adalyn isn’t the female lead of the next book in this trilogy if she is using the same format that she has used for her other books. There wasn’t a single character in the book that I didn’t love and if anyone has a Donavan-Martinez style family, marry me because they seem like a hoot!
Overall, the book made me happy. I liked the characters, the setting, the premise of the book, and I always like the writing. I’m slowly but surely collecting Flynn’s backlog and they are definitely my feel-good books during this pandemic.
